Pernot Microbiology Camp Wraps Up for Summer 2023

This year's Pernot Microbiology Camp has finished for the 2023 year. The summer camp was held July 10-14.

The camp's aim is to "provide students with an introduction to microbiological concepts and laboratory techniques relevant to college level curriculum". They focus on teaching students about three subfields of microbiology: Food System Science, Human Health and Disease, and Aquatic Microbiology.

According to the OSU webpage for High School STEM Summer Camps, "students will conduct microbiology focused laboratory experiments, learn critical science skills, go on field trips, including a day trip to the Oregon coast to visit Hatfield Marine Station, and hear from diverse speakers across the field of microbiology about career avenues and opportunities in science, technology, and education."

Professor Stephen Atkinson conducts research in the Indoor Wet Lab at the Aquatic Animal Health Lab.

It is a hands-on, immersive, and interactive experience, and informational for students who are curious about how to continue on their path to a career in Microbiology.

This year, students took a field trip to the John L. Fryer Aquatic Animal Health Lab just outside of Corvallis, learned how to make kombucha, conducted experiments in an OSU lab, and created fish prints.
